I'm Michelle—counselor, supervisor, professor, mentor, cheerleader and genuinely in love with supporting people in their journey to learning, loving, healing, and living a more balanced life.
I live in Portland, Oregon with my husband and spunky tween daughter. My favorite color is green, the color of nature, of growth, of health, and groundedness.
Inspired by my own journey of self-discovery in my career, I guide clients and counselors to find their authentic selves in their lives, their families, and their work.
The idea of therapy can be exciting, stressful, overwhelming or downright terrifying. I am proud of you for beginning the search, for exploring, reaching out, and caring enough about yourself and your relationships to seek help. You are worth it and so are your relationships.
Choosing a therapist can be an overwhelming task when there are so many options and they all seem to have similar credentials. To help you through this process, I've tried to provide as much information as possible about what sets me apart from many therapists in the area. I am happy to provide a free phone consultation to give you an opportunity to ask questions and see if therapy with me feels like what's next.
My new book is all about you, counselors!
The Heart of Counseling was written for you and your work to become the best and most balanced and authentic counselor you can be for your clients. This is a book for those who never learned that who you are is your greatest intervention as you sit and hold space with others. This book encourages you to think differently than the text books suggest, to learn to integrate your full self into your work. This is a book for encouragement, healing, and learning to trust what we feel in our bodies as we sit with others. This is a book for therapists who feel alone, like an imposter, and unsure how long they can do “this work”.
This book hopes to reach those who feel lost in a world of helpers who also need help and encouragement.
With nearly 25 years in the field of counseling, I have great passion for training clinicians. I provide supervision and consultation for supervisors, licensees, registered associates and graduate level interns.
As an Oregon approved supervisor for LPCs and LMFTs and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, I have extensive training and experience providing supervision and education for new and experienced clinicians.
My supervision is grounded in the principles of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), focusing on the development of a strong supervisory relationship to help clinicians feel safe and supported as they explore who they are as a therapist. In doing so, my supervision style emphasizes self-of-the-therapist growth and reflects the COAL acronym created by Dan Siegel: Curiosity, Openness, Acceptance, and Love.
As a professional therapist, and graduate professor for the last fifteen years, I have the knowledge and experience to present on a range of topics. Some of these include
professional resources for counselors
marriage, divorce + remarriage
infertility
emotionally focused therapy (EFT)
attachment + trauma
